We wanted to notify pup parents that we are receiving reports of kids displaying symptoms of canine cough. Many of those pups started with a mild hack, almost as if they had something stuck in their throat and quickly escalated to a dry cough throughout the day. Symptoms usually present themselves 3-10 days after exposure, which makes it difficult to determine which daycare days were exposed, but we are asking parents to please keep your kiddo home if they aren’t feeling well to stop the spread! The cough will generally run its course in 14 days, but we are requesting pups to be 7 days symptom free before returning to school please!
What are the Symptoms of Canine Cough/Dog Cold?
– coughing (dry hacking, choking or gagging sound)

We understand that a pup coming down with canine cough is an inconvenience for both pups and their parents. Unfortunately, if dogs aren’t presenting symptoms and come to daycare, it makes it very easy to spread. Canine cough is very common and can be picked up anywhere dogs frequent, much like us getting a cold. As much as we sanitize surfaces, it is airborne. Air filters are changed monthly to help cut down on the spread of illnesses in addition to our regular cleaning protocols. Even though 100% of our pups are vaccinated, the Bordetella vaccine protects our kids against several, but not all, strains of canine cough.
If your dog gets “Canine/Kennel Cough,” don’t panic. Typically symptoms will resolve on their own within a couple weeks (depending on whether it is viral or bacterial). There are lots of home remedies to soothe your dog while they are getting over their doggy cold, but please, always consult your vet before giving your dog any over the counter medication. Though canine cough is contagious, not every dog that comes in contact will come down with it. It’s most prevalent in younger and senior dogs or those with a lowered immune system.
